Kensington & Fulham Open Studios – Earls Court Life

Posted by Caroline Lofts

Sometimes the art gallery experience can be a little clinical, everything under glass, security guard on velvet rope duty, voices all hushed so as not to spoil the quiet required to truly appreciate the masters on display – stop me when you’ve decided against this particular type of excursion. I left ages ago.

So I’m very pleased to report that there are others who, like me, prefer a less solemn encounter with the easel.

Pocket Arts have addressed this issue head on and have come up with the perfect antidote. They have persuaded local artists across Kensington, Earls Court and Fulham to open up their personal studio space, be it in their homes or nearby warehouse, and allow us civilians a chance to enjoy their work in the very place it was created. An opportunity to see the flecks of paint that missed the canvas and remain stubbornly on the parquet below as a testament to the action involved in making something ultimately inanimate.

Opening times
Fri 4th October 6-9pm                 Fri 11th October 6-9pm
Sat 5th October 11am-6pm        Sat 12th October 11am-6pm
Sun 6th October 11am-6pm       Sun 13th October 11am-6pm

Visit Pocket Arts website to stay up to date with the full and growing listings of artists exhibiting and, in the meantime, have a look at these and imagine where they might have been painted…

Vy's Nails - Earls Court Life

Vy’s Nails – Earls Court Life

Posted by Caroline Lofts

I am the pickiest when it comes to beauty treatments and so I count myself as a very lucky Earls Court resident who happens to have one of the best nail salons in London on their doorstep.

Vy’s Nails (pronounced Vee’s) occupies a small retail space whose previous incarnation seemed to be a tiny call centre cupboard on a converted raised-ground floor apartment on the Earl’s Court Road. It sounds awful, I know, and trust me when I tell you that it was then but it definitely isn’t now! And this is the key to Vy’s and Vy herself.

Vy took this tiny space and somehow rejigged it, tardis style. It is now sleek, clean and streamlined. Four pedicure massage chairs (thank god for these!) and six manicure stations with a further two nail drying stations at the back.

But the important part of all of this is that Vy’s Salon delivers one of the best mani-pedis in London. Seriously, even the die-hard New Yorkers who despair when they arrive on our shores looking for a proper nail treatment have come to love, and travel for, this unassuming West London salon.

You can get a traditional Mani-Pedi for £40 or upgrade to the paraffin wax treatment for an extra £10. They work with Gelish in a zillion colours and also have the extensions covered if you’ve bitten off all your nails like I have!

If Vy isn’t there herself then ask for Bin or Amy – although everyone is good here. And don’t forget to eat one or two of the amazing sweets up at the cash register. Sometimes I pop in to make appointments just so I can snaffle a couple of these down! And that little nugget of info might make me a greedy so and so, but I’m a greedy so and so with impeccable nails.

Artpeggios – Earls Court Life

Alright, I’m giving you a heads up now. A smug alert if you like, but just what would Earls Court be without its own Music and Art Academy? Doesn’t every postcode have one dahlink!

Artpeggios is a one stop shop for all things creative and caters for anyone aged eight and up. Yes, that’s me and you too.

Created by Jacques Nazaire, a professional musician and artist, and Guillaume Bonpun, a keen amateur bassist and a financier with 20 years experience in the City, together they share a love of music and a firm belief that music and art are a core part of education… and life.

And they have made sure that they are well equipped to provide for every artistic eventuality. Are you a budding artist with an interest in learning more about life drawing? Then sign up for one of their classes that takes place in their own private on site artist’s studio. If you prefer a more modern approach then get to grips with state of the art image and video editing software , graphic tablets and more. There’s even a course on how to draw in Manga style!

Want to try out the drums but don’t want the neighbours involved? Piano, drums, acoustic and electric guitars, and a plethora of other instruments are available to use as well as a fully equipped digital studio if you want to record your efforts. There’s even a DJing room with 15 computers equipped with great music software, keyboards and DJ turn-tables.

The ethos here is to encourage the exploration of creativity under the watchful and helpful supervision of those in the know. You lead, they guide. It’s a wonderful idea really.

And if like me you’ve got a little one in tow there are musical movement classes for wobblers and toddlers alike. Call. Book. Go.

The Mansion Bar & Parlour- Is now closed

The Mansion Bar

Every now and again you need a little pick me up, well, I do anyway. West Brompton does not disappoint because the recently opened Mansion Bar and Parlour has decided to throw its hat into the ring with Champagne & Oyster Thursdays. For a mere £30 you can enjoy a bottle of Champagne and half a dozen oysters and if that isn’t the best way to start the weekend then I don’t know what is!

Christmas CYJ - Oysters chilled on ice_1

With a sleek nod to the 1920’s sprinkle with a bit of neon here and fluoro there it’s sometimes hard to be sure which century you’re in but rest assured that the very dapper bar staff will make certain that you feel welcomed and well taken care of as soon as you step through their doors.

If Thursday is already booked up then don’t dismay, there’s a very civilised Champagne & Jazz Lunch laid on for you every Sunday, are you starting to sense a theme here? Tuck in to a traditional Sunday Roast with the gentle thrums of live Jazz and Blues in the background. All main courses are served with a free glass of champagne making this my new Sunday destination forever!

Not in the mood for a roast? Choose something lighter from the All Day Brunch menu instead.

Sold? I thought so.

Hot Sauce Competition - Earls Court Life

Hot Sauce Competition – Earls Court Life

Posted by Caroline Lofts

The Case Of The Perfect Condiment will be judged very soon in Earls Court.

Detective Peel and Special Inspector Harrison have accepted a very special case…The Case of the Perfect Condiment. Their mission; to look into some of the best hot sauces in London in an ongoing search to find perfection in each category.

The first target is hot sauce…and London is a big city. They need your help! Think you’ve got the perfect hot sauce? Swing by The Agency and present your case.

The rules are plain and simple. Competitors will need to serve their sauce to the panel of 4 judges accompanied by some of Evans and Peel’s finest chicken wings. The judges are to be confirmed but the panel will consist of an expert, a connoisseur, a spice junkie and a representative of the sponsor.

The order of the competitors will be decided at random on the day of the competition.

Date: 25/08/13

Arrival Time: 5pm
Start Time: 5:30pm
First Competitor: 6pm
Entry: Free for Competitors and Spectators

Competitors must confirm entry by 01/08/13 with any special requirements or requests. If competitors would like to view the kitchen and/or try the wings before the competition this must be pre-arranged with The Agency.

Personally I’d like to throw Mike’s Hot honey into the ring. I know that it’s technically a New York City special, but surely we can bend the rules just a little….? What say you:

Mike’s Hot Honey is a chili pepper-infused honey made in Brooklyn, NY. Our Hot Honey is a delicious pairing with a wide variety of foods including pizza, chicken, ribs, biscuits, roasted vegetables, fruits, cheeses and even ice cream. Also useful in cocktails and marinades, Mike’s Hot Honey is a versatile condiment made with the heat lover in mind.

Contact: michael.harrison2@hotmail.co.uk if you think you have solved the case!
