Noor Jahan – Earls Court Life
Named after a legendary Empress of the Mughal Empire it could be said that Noor Jahan in Earls Court has a lot to live up to, but I’m not sure this quiet curry house on the corner of Bina Gardens has anything to worry about. It opened it’s doors in early 1964 offering a staple of fresh, light, Northern Indian food and they got it right the first time; there hasn’t been a seat left empty after 7.30pm since.
The fact that there are regulars that have been frequenting for over fifty years is a testament to the good food and friendly service on offer here, but there’s another side to Noor Jahan that makes it that little bit more special than all the rest. It’s unassuming, and not necessarily the first place on the strip you would choose to visit – the front facade is plain, cream, with cherry wood window frames and faded gold signage, I honestly don’t think it has changed in all the twenty-five years I have been going there – and so most customers have found themselves there by virtue of a recommendation.
And this word of mouth has obviously gone the distance because on too many occasions it has been unsurprising to discover upon arrival that your favourite table has been given over to the likes of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. So it’s worth booking is all I’m saying.
The waiters are all dressed smartly with waistcoats, trousers and bowties. they know their menu, they know their wine list and the are happy to help you with any questions you might have. The menu covers most if not all of the traditional curry house dishes you’ll already be familliar with but it’s worth having a look at the chef’s specials as well. I’m quite partial to the Tandoori King Prawn Karahi myself.
I love a success story and if ever there was one in our little nook it’s got to be Noor Jahan. Enjoy!Noor Jahan 2 Bina Gardens, Earls Court, SW5 0LD 020 7373 6522
